Ian approaches teaching from a very broad and eclectic musical background. As a graduate of the University of Guelph where he studied jazz guitar, Ian’s method emphasizes the importance of a depth of musical knowledge that translates into a well rounded music education.
Ian began his playing career in hardcore-punk and metal bands and currently occupies his time playing and composing in a multitude of projects that range from pop, to country, to surf-rock, to jazz and free music.
Ian appreciates the weird, unusual and experimental. He encourages the building and maintenance of musical tools that will allow the student to make the music they want to hear. Ian strives to let his students thrive in any genre while also developing a critical and sensitive ear attuned to new sounds and possibilities.
Here is what Ian has to say about teaching at JamSchool:
“It is inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented teachers with such a wide variety of backgrounds and specialties. JamSchool challenges me everyday to not only be a better musician but also a better teacher.
JamSchool immediately makes the musical and performing community accessible to students and emphasizes that music should be fun. Understanding that the best music happens through collaboration, JamSchool’s unique band class programs ensure that its students have the opportunity to work and create together in a focused, guided setting.”
